#12: The Why & How of Choosing Truth Over Feelings

December 5, 2020

How do you do when you know you need to choose truth over feelings?

Are you driven by your feelings even though you know somewhere, deep down inside, it would be best for you to choose truth in the moment?

And let me ask you this: Do you have a standard for truth? Or have you hopped onto the recent cultural bandwagon of belief that claims we can define truth for ourselves? “My truth is . . . ” Or, do you stand on the word of God as absolute truth and understand that “my truth” and “your truth” is simply a statement of opinion?

Sticking with the standard of absolute truth is one of the most important things you can do for your emotional health, and this is especially true during times of change, transition, acceleration or even outright chaos. That’s because the temptation to live our lives by following our feelings is so loud, and doing so regularly creates train wrecks in our lives that distract at best…and derail and destroy at worst. Feelings make the worst drivers!

If you’re ready to learn the Why and How of choosing truth over feelings consistently so you can create a life you really love to live — one that isn’t wrecking you at every bend and valley — then you’re going to want to grab your journal and a pen and . . . Let’s Go!

What you will learn in this episode:

  • What absolute truth is and why defining your *own* truth will never set you free;
  • How feelings make terrible leaders and, instead, how to choose absolute truth;
  • The exact steps to follow to choose truth over feelings, found in Philippians 4:4-9

Scripture References mentioned in this episode:

John 8:31-32 —
31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 6:28-29 —
28 They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?” 29 Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

Philippians 4:4-9 —
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
