Links to Health

May 17, 2012

I’ve always been somewhat passionate about maintaining health and nurturing it in natural ways, but it wasn’t until I experienced extreme postpartum anxiety after the birth of my second son in 2009 that my need for quality, natural solutions became extreme and urgent. I certainly tried conventional medicine to deal with the condition, but nothing seemed to work for me; in fact, the various drugs my doctors prescribed to get my condition under control caused all sorts of side effects. And getting off the medications was one of the worst experiences in my life (only second to the actual experience of postpartum anxiety).

As a result of my experience, I began to dig into the scriptures to find what the Bible had to say about regaining and maintaining vibrant health, and I also did a fair share of research on various natural health practices and remedies. I’ve been particularly interested in finding natural modalities that really harness the truth found in the scriptures, especially as they pertain to health and healing. Natural healing websites and books can be breeding grounds for new age thought and other spiritual beliefs that don’t line up with my Christianity. To that end, I’ve done a lot of filtering of information as I read with the Holy Spirit as my guide. I’ve partaken of the meat while spitting out the bones, so to speak. I recommend you do the same.

Even though I’ve been reading and researching in this area for a number of years now, I’m still in the process of learning and receiving revelation about how to obtain and maintain vibrant health. So I want to invite you on this journey with me! Here are a few websites I’ve frequented over the last few years to expand my vocabulary on the topics of healing and health:

http://www.lef.org/ – This is the website of Life Extension Foundation. I take a number of vitamins and supplements, and this is where I get most of them. The organization puts a tremendous amount of research and quality control around the product they produce. What I love about this website  is its high-quality content on various subjects related to supplementation and natural health. I want to stress that it is very important to view all of the information presented here with your faith “turned on.” God is the giver of life and it is through him and his Word that all things exist and are held together (Colossians 1:16-17). That includes human beings and their health. Some of the articles presented on the website may give you the impression that we can have almost ultimate control over the contributing factors to chronic illness and aging. While I believe it is true we can do a lot to create and maintain our own vibrant health, especially when we are educated properly, there is no replacement for the wisdom and revelation of God for our ultimate health – spirit, soul and body. (*That’s just my little disclaimer!*)

http://drhyman.com/ – I saw many doctors when I suffered from postpartum anxiety and even had a functional medicine doctor who helped me in balancing my hormones and getting me back on track. But one of the biggest contributors to regaining my health was finding the straight forward, balanced advice found on Dr. Hyman’s website and in his books. He promotes a whole foods, primarily plant based diet (with minimal amounts of high quality animal proteins). With all the research I’ve done, this is the most balanced approach I’ve found to eating that really seems to capture the best advice of all modalities. Dr. Hyman also contributed to the Daniel Plan program implemented at Saddleback Church under the leadership of Pastor Rick Warren, so his theories and practices have been put into action by a Bible believing church community with extraordinary results. Dr. Hyman’s blog is a great place to get started learning about the seven different areas of wellness we can explore to increase our vitality and overall health.

http://www.danielplan.com/ – The Daniel Plan is a program conceived by Ps. Rick Warren, of Saddleback Church, based on the biblical story of Daniel, who forsook the king’s rich food in order to honor God’s best for him and his friends. In partnership with Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Daniel Amen, Ps. Rick and his team have created this website as a landing spot for those who wish to get resources, guidance and accountability in pursuing a healthy lifestyle that draws from the Word of God. This website has a tremendous wealth of information on it. You can sign up on the site to track your own progress on the plan and you can even join a group to “Connect for Success,” one of the program’s core principles.

http://www.drleaf.com/ – Dr. Caroline Leaf is a neurobiologist and a Christian. She blogs about topics related to optimal brain performance and she regularly references both scientific data and the Bible in her writings. I read her book, Who Switched Off My Brain?, when I was recovering from postpartum, in an effort to understand how thoughts affect our body – specifically our stress responses.  I found it extremely to know that what I decide to set my mind on has a big impact on how healthy my brain and my body will be.

http://hopefaithprayer.com/scriptures/healing-scriptures-dodie-osteen/ – Lastly, I want to round out this health and healing links section with a really great list of scriptures on healing. This link takes you to the list of scriptures that Dodie Osteen, mother of Ps. Joel Osteen, lived on when she defeated cancer many years ago. These scriptures were originally listed in her book, Healed of Cancer. It’s good to remember that the Word of God is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12) and it brings life and healing to the body (Proverbs 4:21-22). We can’t underestimate the effect that reading, meditating on and speaking the Word can have on our bodies and our health.

  1. Matt says:

Great article on healing and health. I especially enjoyed your link on Dodie Osteen’s healing Scriptures. In my research, I found a similar article with a little more comprehensive explanation of some of the verses. http://eurasianorthwest.org/healing-scriptures/
