#47: Actively Stewarding Your Children’s Education

August 7, 2021

How are you handling your kids’ education in this season?

In the last few months some incredible statistics have come out around the country indicating that many families are choosing to take a pass on public school education for their kids and, instead, homeschool them or pursue some sort of a hybrid method. And it’s no surprise given the unsteady nature of the traditional bricks and mortar classroom over the last year and a half — kids having to wear masks, social distancing, not being able to connect with friends as closely as they once could, maybe not being able to learn as effectively with everyone’s mouths covered. And then there’s just the psychological impact of it all. Those numbers are even more shocking.

But an interesting thing has happened as the eyes of parents have swung onto their kids’ classrooms in a very focused way: many are realizing the curriculum being taught isn’t in line with their Biblical worldview (in some cases, it’s in total conflict). Many are shocked to find what’s actually being taught — even to their small kids — in this setting. And this fact, more than anything, has been bringing homeschool onto the table for many families this past year. Have you had any of these concerns yourself?

I sat down with my husband, Doug, recently to record a session for our home church, REVIVE Church of Tampa, where we talked about what it can look like to actively steward your children’s education in this season. Now, the spoiler alert is that we homeschool our kids and we’re big fans, so we talk at length about this option, BUT we also discuss what you can do to actively steward your kids’ schooling if you can’t homeschool. We’ve got you covered!

So if you’re ready to dig into this topic and be a little challenged in the area of “active parenting,” then I want you to grab your Bible, your journal and a pen, and . . . Let’s Go!

Scripture References mentioned in this episode:

Proverbs 22:6 —
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Psalm 78:1-8 —
Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.
